A recent study estimated the Total Economic Value (TEV) of the Pichavaram Mangrove Ecosystem at ₹2,485.38 crore.
Pichavaram Mangrove Forest in Tamil Nadu provides ecosystem services such as coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, fisheries, tourism and climate regulation.
Its blue carbon asset value is estimated at ₹1,612.40 crore, including carbon stored in vegetation and soil.
Soil organic carbon alone accounts for ₹1,224.63 crore, showing that much of the carbon is stored below the ground in mangrove sediments.
The study estimated an average of 79.449 tonnes of carbon per hectare in mangrove vegetation and 251.14 tonnes per hectare in soil.
