Pingali Venkayya's 150th Birth Anniversary

India observed the 150th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya on 2 August 2026, and the Prime Minister paid tribute to him.
Pingali Venkayya (1876–1963) was an Indian freedom fighter, educationist, geologist, author, and the designer of the initial version of the Indian National Flag (Tiranga).
He was born at Bhatlapenumarru village, Krishna district, Andhra Pradesh.
He presented his flag design to Mahatma Gandhi during the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) session at Vijayawada in 1921.
On 13 April 1923, during a procession by local Congress volunteers in Nagpur commemorating the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, the Swaraj flag with the spinning wheel was hoisted.
The present National Flag of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 22 July 1947, based on Venkayya's design with the Ashoka Chakra replacing the spinning wheel (Charkha).
Then the spinning wheel was replaced with the navy blue 24-spoke Ashoka Chakra.
