Plant Genome Saviour Awards – PPV and FRA

  • The Plant Genome Saviour Awards were presented in New Delhi.
  • The event marked the Silver Jubilee of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FRA) Act, 2001, and the 21st Foundation Day of the Authority.
  • Farmers and community groups were recognised for conserving traditional and indigenous seed varieties across India.
  • Awardees included the Community Seed Bank of Telangana, Shiksha Niketan of Purba Bardhaman (West Bengal), Mithilanchal Makhana Producers’ Association, and CRS-Na Dihing Tenga Unyan Committee of Assam.
  • PPV&FRA grants intellectual property rights to plant breeders and protects farmers’ rights to save, use, and exchange seeds.
  • The Authority maintains the National Register of Plant Varieties (NRPV) and promotes research, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.
  • Financial incentives of up to 15 lakh are provided to support seed conservation and farmer-led biodiversity initiatives.
