The Plant Genome Saviour Awards were presented in New Delhi.
The event marked the Silver Jubilee of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FRA) Act, 2001, and the 21st Foundation Day of the Authority.
Farmers and community groups were recognised for conserving traditional and indigenous seed varieties across India.
Awardees included the Community Seed Bank of Telangana, Shiksha Niketan of Purba Bardhaman (West Bengal), Mithilanchal Makhana Producers’ Association, and CRS-Na Dihing Tenga Unyan Committee of Assam.
PPV&FRA grants intellectual property rights to plant breeders and protects farmers’ rights to save, use, and exchange seeds.
The Authority maintains the National Register of Plant Varieties (NRPV) and promotes research, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.
Financial incentives of up to ₹15 lakh are provided to support seed conservation and farmer-led biodiversity initiatives.
