A torpedo jar fragment, four ancient ring wells and over 250 ceramic pieces were found during underwater archaeological exploration off the Poompuhar coast, Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu.
The torpedo jar, believed to have come from West Asia, was found about 10 metres deep and 2 km from the coast.
Torpedo jars were tubular vessels used to transport liquids such as wine and oil by ship.
The four ring wells had diameters of 60–65 cm and may indicate the presence of an ancient palaeochannel.
Poompuhar, an ancient port city also known as Kaveripoompattinam, is being studied to understand its archaeological remains and changes caused by coastal erosion.
