- The day is also known as Jan Prasaran Divas in recognition of its public service significance.
- The observance commemorates M.K Gandhi’s first and only live broadcast on All India Radio on 12 November 1947.
- Gandhi addressed more than two lakh refugees stationed at the Kurukshetra Camp through this historic broadcast from Broadcasting House, New Delhi.
- The day also recalls Usha Mehta’s role in freedom broadcasting during the Quit India Movement.
- Usha Mehta was arrested on 12 November 1942 in Bombay, and the under ground radio transmitter she operated was seized on the same day.
