Chinese scientists discovered rare meteorite relics in lunar soil brought back by the Chang’e-6 mission.
Researchers identified CI chondrite fragments, water- and carbon-rich meteorites originating from the outer Solar System.
Findings suggest the Earth-Moon system experienced more carbonaceous chondrite impacts than previously known and may explain the lunar origin of water.
Chang’e-6 returned 1,935.3 grams of samples from the Moon’s far side South Pole-Aitken Basin in 2024.
