The Supreme Court directed all States and Union Territories to remove stray dogs from schools, hospitals, sports complexes, and other public institutions.
The dogs must be sterilised and vaccinated under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules 2023 before relocation to designated shelters.
Each institution must appoint a nodal officer for maintenance and surveillance and ensure fenced or secured premises.
Local bodies have been ordered to complete the removal and submit compliance reports within 8 weeks.
The directions aim to prevent dog-bite incidents and ensure citizens’ safety while maintaining animal welfare standards.
