The Rajasthan Cabinet has removed the rule that barred candidates with more than two children from contesting Panchayati Raj and urban local body elections.
The two-child norm was introduced in 1995 for population control but is now considered outdated, as the fertility rate has dropped to 2 from 3.6 in 1991–94.
Two Amendment Bills will be introduced in the ongoing Assembly session to change the Rajasthan Panchayati Raj Act, 1994, and the Rajasthan Municipalities Act, 2009.
