- The Global Assessment Report (GAR) on Disaster Risk Reduction 2025 was released by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).
- The direct costs of disasters averaged USD 70–80 billion a year between 1970 and 2000.
- Between 2001 and 2020 these annual costs grew significantly to USD 180–200 billion.
- In 2025, the total disaster costs will now exceed $2.3 trillion annually when an indirect and ecosystem impacts are included.
- Cities are projected to add 1.2 billion residents, and 98.4 per cent of them will be in the Global South.
- Losses from flooding will increase between 5 per cent to 13 per cent.
- Over 90% of the land is at risk of becoming degraded by 2050, up from the current 40 per cent.
- The past 30 years have seen an estimated loss of $3.8 trillion in crops and livestock production due to disaster events.
- It equals an average annual loss of $ 123 billion per year or 5% of the global agri cultural GDP.
