  • The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution seeking exemption from the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) for teachers appointed before August 23, 2010.
  • The resolution seeks an amendment to Section 23 of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
  • The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) had made TET compulsory for teachers from August 23, 2010.
  • About 3,28,701 teachers who have served for 15–20 years could be affected by the TET requirement for promotion and continuation in service.
  • The Supreme Court has directed these teachers to clear TET by August 31, 2028.
  • The resolution urges the Union Government to take legal steps and issue a notification through NCTE.
