  • In 2023, India experienced 480,583 road accidents, showing a 4.2% increase compared to the previous year (2022).
  • Young adults aged 18-45 years accounted for 66.4% of all road accident victims during 2023.
  • Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents in 2023, closely followed by Madhya Pradesh.
  • Uttar Pradesh had the most fatalities, with Tamil Nadu coming in second place for the highest death toll.
  • Highways, which represent roughly 5% of the total road network, were responsible for more than 53% of the accidents and 59% of the fatalities.
  • Two-wheeler riders were the largest group of accident-related fatalities, constituting 45%, with pedestrians as the second highest group.
