The saltwater crocodile population in Sundarbans Biosphere Reserve (SBR) increased in 2025, with 213 direct sightings recorded.
The estimated population ranges between 220 and 242 crocodiles, up from 204 to 234 in 2024.
The encounter rate in 2025 is approximately 0.18 crocodiles per kilometre, or one crocodile per 5.5 km of creek studied.
The survey covered 1,168 km of creeks, accounting for 64% of the significant creek length in the SBR.
Saltwater crocodiles prefer creeks and rivers with high tide widths below 180 metres and tolerate a wide range of water salinity.
The West Bengal government has conserved crocodiles through the Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project since 1976, releasing 577 crocodiles into the wild until 2022.
