  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has given in-principle approval to resume the tiger reintroduction project in Satkosia Tiger Reserve, Odisha.
  • Satkosia Tiger Reserve covers 1,136 square kilometres, including a 523 square kilometre core area, and currently has no resident tigers.
  • Tiger reintroduction involves relocating tigers to habitats where the species has declined or disappeared after ensuring suitable habitat and prey availability.
  • The 2018 reintroduction project failed after one tiger died in a poacher's snare, and the tigress Sundari was relocated due to human-wildlife conflict.
  • The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has directed measures such as village relocation, prey population improvement, creation of inviolate areas, staff capacity building, and stronger protection before the project resumes.
