- This marks the first recorded sighting of the Saunders’s tern in Chennai.
- The species is also known as the black-shafted tern and is usually associated with north-western Indian Ocean regions.
- The Sternula saundersi are a small, ground-nesting marine bird species.
- Its IUCN Red List status is Least Concern.
- The Adyar Estuary is formed by the Adyar River at the point at which the river meets the Bay of Bengal.
