The Madras High Court upheld most findings of the Segur Plateau Elephant Corridor Inquiry Committee formed by the Supreme Court.
The court allowed private landowners to retain and cultivate land in an eco-friendly manner without disturbing elephants or using artificial barriers.
It set aside the committee’s recommendation to hand over private properties to the Tamil Nadu government.
The bench directed land acquisition for the corridor to begin within six months from the date of the order.
Resort owners had challenged the validity of land purchase restrictions imposed after the 1991 private forest notification.
The court noted that the Hospitality Association of Mudumalai had ongoing legal challenges related to the 1991 notification and 2010 corridor declaration.
