SIM Verification for Apps

December 5 , 2025 14 hrs 0 min 19 0
  • The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has directed messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Snapchat, to implement mandatory SIM binding within 90 days.
  • Effective February 2026, apps must deactivate if the registered SIM is removed, replaced, or deactivated.
  • Web versions of these apps must automatically log out users every six hours, requiring fresh QR-based authentication.
  • SIM binding continuously verifies that the original registered SIM is active, unlike the current one-time verification system.
  • Messaging platforms are now classified as Telecommunication Identifier User Entities under the Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules 2025.
  • The move aims to curb cyber fraud, impersonation scams, and cross-border offences by linking app activity to verified mobile identities.
