  • Sirpur is a 5th–12th century multi-religious archaeological city in the Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh.
  • It is located on the banks of the Mahanadi River, near Raipur.
  • Sirpur was the capital of Dakshina Kosala under the Panduvanshi and Somavamshi kings (6th–8th century).
  • Excavations have revealed 22 Shiva temples, 5 Vishnu temples, 10 Buddhist viharas, and 3 Jain viharas.
  • Key monuments include the 7th-century Lakshmana Temple, Surang Tila temple complex, 8th-century Teevardev Buddha Vihara, and Baleshwar Temple.
  • Sirpur’s architecture blends Shaiva, Vaishnava, Buddhist, and Jain traditions.
  • The site includes palaces, marketplaces, stupas, monasteries, meditation cells, water systems, and a 6th-century market complex.
  • The Chhattisgarh government is being prepared for a UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
