- Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) signed an MoU for the production of the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft.
- The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft, with more than 200 already produced and operated by over 16 commercial airlines.
- Under the agreement, HAL will have the right to manufacture SJ-100 aircraft for domestic customers, fully producing them in India.
- This is the first complete passenger aircraft to be produced in India since HAL’s AVRO HS-748 project from 1961 to 1988.
- Over the next ten years, India is expected to require over 200 jets for regional connectivity and an additional 350 aircraft for the Indian Ocean region.
