Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) signed an MoU for the production of the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft.
The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft, with more than 200 already produced and operated by over 16 commercial airlines.
Under the agreement, HAL will have the right to manufacture SJ-100 aircraft for domestic customers, fully producing them in India.
This is the first complete passenger aircraft to be produced in India since HAL’s AVRO HS-748 project from 1961 to 1988.
Over the next ten years, India is expected to require over 200 jets for regional connectivity and an additional 350 aircraft for the Indian Ocean region.
