- The Tamil Nadu state government extends the term of Special Officers (SOs) for administering rural local bodies by six more months, till January 5, 2026.
- The extension covers 9,581 village panchayats, 314 panchayat union councils, and 28 district panchayats across 28 districts.
- An ordinance will be promulgated to formalise the extension, to be replaced by a bill in the next Assembly session.
- SOs were appointed after the elected representatives’ term ended on January 5, 2024.
- The government cited delays in the reorganisation of local bodies and pending ward delimitation as reasons for the extension.
