The Tamil Nadu state government extends the term of Special Officers (SOs) for administering rural local bodies by six more months, till January 5, 2026.
The extension covers 9,581 village panchayats, 314 panchayat union councils, and 28 district panchayats across 28 districts.
An ordinance will be promulgated to formalise the extension, to be replaced by a bill in the next Assembly session.
SOs were appointed after the elected representatives’ term ended on January 5, 2024.
The government cited delays in the reorganisation of local bodies and pending ward delimitation as reasons for the extension.
