  • BirdLife International’s State of the World’s Birds 2026 report found that 45% of migratory bird species are declining, while one in nine faces extinction.
  • The report is the first edition focused on migratory birds and their flyways, which are the routes birds use during migration.
  • The Slender-billed Curlew became extinct in 2025, marking the first global bird extinction in mainland Eurasia and Africa in recent centuries.
  • Major threats include invasive species, intensive agriculture, climate change and unsustainable hunting.
  • The Nairobi Flyways Declaration was signed to promote international cooperation for protecting migratory birds and their habitats across entire flyways.
