State Party Status to TVK

  • The Election Commission of India (ECI) has recognised Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as a State Party in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry after it met the prescribed criteria.
  • TVK was earlier a registered but unrecognised political party; recognition allows its ‘Whistle’ election symbol to be reserved.
  • In Tamil Nadu, TVK won 108 of 233 contested seats with 34.92% vote share in the 2026 Assembly election.
  • In Puducherry, TVK won 2 of 28 contested seats with 16.85% vote share.

Conditions for Recognition as a State Party

  • A political party is recognised as a State Party if it satisfies any one of the following conditions in a State/Union Territory.
  • Secures 6% of valid votes in a State Assembly election and wins at least 2 Assembly seats.
  • Secures 6% of valid votes in a Lok Sabha election from the State and wins at least 1 Lok Sabha seat.
  • Wins at least 3% of the total Assembly seats or 3 seats, whichever is more.
  • Wins at least 1 Lok Sabha seat for every 25 seats allotted to the State in the Lok Sabha.
  • Secures at least 8% of the total valid votes in a State Assembly or Lok Sabha election.

Conditions for Recognition as a National Party

  • A political party is recognised as a National Party if it satisfies any one of these.
  • Secures 6% of valid votes in 4 or more States in Lok Sabha/Assembly elections and wins at least 4 Lok Sabha seats.
  • Wins at least 2% of total Lok Sabha seats, with its MPs elected from at least 3 States.
  • Is recognised as a State Party in at least 4 States.
