- The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made it mandatory for all foreign students studying in India to register on the Study in India (SII) portal from the academic year 2025–26.
- The Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) admitting foreign students must also register on the SII portal without exception.
- Study visas for foreign students will now be directly linked to the SII portal as per UGC instructions.
- Until now, there was no centralised tracking system for foreign students in India, causing issues in monitoring visa status and overstaying cases.
