- A proposal to expand the Sundarbans Tiger Reserve (STR) by 1,100 square kilo meters has been submitted to MoEF&CC.
- The expansion will increase the reserve’s total area to 3,629.57 square kilo meters, making it the second-largest tiger reserve in India.
- The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has already given technical approval for the expansion.
- The new area will include the Raidighi, Matla, and Ramganga forest ranges in the South 24-Parganas district.
- The current tiger population is estimated at 101, with 80 inside the STR and 21 in the adjoining forests.
