Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026

  • The Union Cabinet approved the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 to increase the Supreme Court of India’s judge strength from 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India).
  • The bill proposes adding four more judges by amending the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to improve judicial efficiency and ensure faster justice delivery.
  • Article 124(1) of the Constitution of India provides for the establishment of the Supreme Court and allows Parliament to increase the number of judges through legislation.
  • The strength of the Supreme Court judges was increased from 25 to 30 in 2008 and from 30 to 33 in 2019 through amendments to the 1956 Act.
  • The additional expenditure on judges’ salaries, supporting staff and facilities will be provided from the Consolidated Fund of India (CFI).
