Supreme Court on Collegium

The Supreme Court defended the Collegium system while hearing the challenge to the law on the appointment of Election Commissioners.
Justice Dipankar Datta said the Centre’s comparison of the Collegium with the Election Commissioner selection process was “disquieting”.
He noted that the executive has a role in judicial appointments and can accept or not accept Collegium recommendations.
The court also flagged the Centre’s selective clearance of names recommended by the Collegium.
The Collegium is the system through which senior judges recommend appointments and transfers of judges to higher courts.
