The day is observed to commemorate the day when the name “Tamil Nadu” was officially adopted for the state.
The day marks the historic resolution moved by C.N. Annadurai (Arignar Anna) in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on 18 July 1967 to rename Madras State as Tamil Nadu.
The name change was officially implemented in 1969 after the approval of the Government of India.
Before this, the state was known as Madras State, even after the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, which created linguistic states.
The state was formed as a linguistic state mainly for Tamil-speaking people and is known for its rich Tamil language, culture, literature, and heritage.
November 1 is also observed in Tamil Nadu as the day the Madras State was formed in 1956 after the linguistic reorganisation of states.
