  • A Bill was introduced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to amend the Tamil Nadu Business Facilitation Act, 2018 and establish the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Commission (TNIPC).
  • The Bill proposes Section 16-A, with the Chief Secretary as Chairperson and the Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce as Member-Convener; up to 20 members can also be appointed.
  • The Commission will facilitate and monitor large and strategic investments, including projects involving 200 crore or more or expected to create 5,000 or more jobs.
  • It proposes reducing the clearance time under 22 State Acts and subordinate laws to 21 days, excluding public and local holidays, to speed up investments.
  • The Commission can issue binding directions to departments and nodal agencies for timely clearances, incentives and approvals, and will monitor projects up to the start of operations.
  • It will also review unused industrial land allotted by State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), Small Industries Development Corporation (SIDCO), Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) and Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation (TAHDCO), and monitor projects by TIDCO, TIDEL and TICEL.
