The Madras High Court upheld the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker’s decision to accept the resignations of six All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) MLAs on October 13, 2026.
The six MLAs later joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), and their resignations were submitted between May 26 and June 29, 2026.
The court directed the Speaker to complete the pending disqualification proceedings against four MLAs within two months and publish a timetable within seven days.
It held that accepting resignations and deciding disqualification proceedings are two separate constitutional processes.
The case arose from allegations that AIADMK MLAs violated the party whip during a confidence motion on May 13, 2026.
