Tamil Nadu State Organ Donation Day 2026

Tamil Nadu State Organ Donation Day was observed on 23 September 2026, marking the memory of Hithendran, whose organ donation in 2008 became a major milestone in the State’s organ-donation programme.
The day aims to create awareness about organ donation and honour donors and their families.
From September 2025 to August 2026, Tamil Nadu recorded 312 organ donors and received 1,699 organs and tissues through donations.
From October 2008 to September 2026, the State received 14,845 organs and tissues from 2,550 donors through its organ-donation programme.
TRANSTAN (Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu) was formed in 2015 to regulate and coordinate organ transplantation in the State; the programme itself began in 2008.
In 2025, Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of deceased organ donors among Indian States and performed 2,796 organ transplants, according to National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) data.
Since September 2023, the State has also provided State honours to deceased brain-dead organ donors; 825 donors had received such honours by September 2026.
