Eminent sociologist T.K. Oommen passed away on 26 February 2026 in Gurugram at the age of 88.
T. K. Oommen was Professor Emeritus at Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems.
He was a leading architect of modern Indian sociology and was known for his work on social justice, identity, pluralism, social movements, and political sociology.
He wrote his PhD thesis on the Bhoodan–Gramdan Movement led by Vinoba Bhave.
He served as President of the International Sociological Association and the Indian Sociological Society, and was a member of the Sachar Committee.
He was also the chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the Gujarat Harmony Project, formed after the 2002 communal violence.
He received the Padma Bhushan in 2008 and authored around 20 books and many research articles.
