- The Researchers at the IIT - Madras have achieved a breakthrough in soft landing technology for vertical take-off aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
- They combined a real-time hybrid rocket thruster with a virtual simulation to attain the required landing velocity.
- A touchdown velocity of 0.66 metres per second (m/s) was achieved during testing.
- Hybrid rocket motors were found to be safer and less complex than liquid engines for vertical landing platforms.
- The team also developed a hybrid rocket fuel using compressed air as the oxidiser, enhancing safety and efficiency.
