- The Labour Party-led UK government announced its plans to lower the voting age to 16 in time for the next general election.
- It was the biggest change since 1969, when the voting age was reduced from 21 to 18.
- Registration will begin at the age of 14, under the proposed legislation.
- This change brings UK-wide elections in line with Scotland and Wales, which already allow 16- and 17-year-olds to vote.
- The voter ID system will also now accept UK-issued bank debit and credit cards at polling stations.
