- The World Health Organization and UNICEF released the 2024 update on global WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) progress under SDG 6.
- SDG 6 targets universal access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene by 2030.
- Between 2015 and 2024, 961 million people gained access to safely managed drinking water, raising global coverage from 68% to 74%.
- Rural coverage increased from 50% to 60%, while urban coverage remained at 83%.
- As of 2024, 2.1 billion people still lack safely managed drinking water services.
- Of these, 1.4 billion rely on basic services, 287 million on limited services, 302 million on unimproved sources, and 106 million on surface water.
- The number of people using surface water decreased by 61 million between 2015 and 2024.
- Between 2015 and 2024, 1.2 billion people gained access to safely managed sanitation services, raising global coverage from 48% to 58%.
- Rural sanitation coverage increased from 36% to 49%, and urban coverage from 59% to 66%.
- Open defecation has declined by 429 million people; in urban areas, it is now under 1%.
- As of 2024, 3.4 billion people lack safely managed sanitation, with 1.9 billion using only basic services.
- An estimated 354 million people continue to practise open defecation globally.
- From 2015 to 2024, 1.6 billion people gained access to basic hygiene, increasing global coverage from 66% to 80%.
- Rural hygiene access rose from 52% to 71%, while urban access remained stable at 86%.
- As of 2024, 1.7 billion people still lack basic hygiene services; 611 million have no service at all.
