- It is found in small forest pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
- The species is listed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List.
- About 3,000–9,500 mature individuals are estimated to survive in the wild.
- The first successful captive breeding was achieved in 2005 at Sarahan Pheasantry, Himachal Pradesh.
