WHO-UNICEF WASH Report 2026

The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released the “Progress on Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools 2015–2025” report under the Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
WASH means access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities and basic hygiene services.
In 2025, 429 million school-age children lacked basic drinking water, 460 million lacked basic sanitation, and 362 million lacked basic hygiene services at school.
In India, 50 million school-age children lacked any sanitation service at school in 2025; India is among 28 of 62 countries on track for universal basic drinking-water coverage by 2030.
WASH supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 on health and SDG 6 on water and sanitation.
