Word of the Year 2025 – Parasocial

The Cambridge Dictionary selected “parasocial” as its Word of the Year for 2025.
“Parasocial” means a one-sided emotional bond someone feels with a public figure or an artificial intelligence (AI) system.
The term was first coined in 1956 by Donald Horton and Richard Wohl.
The word reflects growing interest in online behaviour and digital relationships.
