- Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City became the first hospital in the world to administer ITVISMA gene therapy.
- The therapy was given to a patient suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
- ITVISMA is a one-time gene therapy developed by Novartis.
- It works by replacing the defective SMN1 (Survival Motor Neuron 1) gene, enabling the body to produce the SMN (Survival Motor Neuron) protein.
- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) approved ITVISMA, becoming the second country after the United States of America (USA) to approve it.
