  • The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated the day, and it was first observed globally in 2025.
  • The day aims to raise awareness about threats to lakes and encourage their conservation, restoration and sustainable management.
  • Lakes are important for freshwater supply, biodiversity, climate regulation, livelihoods and flood management.
  • Major threats include pollution, excessive water use, agricultural runoff, climate change and habitat degradation.
  • Lake Baikal is the world’s deepest freshwater lake, while Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake by surface area.
