World Orangutan Day 2025 - August 19

  • The day focuses on the conservation of orangutans and their natural habitat.
  • The word orangutan comes from the Malay words “Orang,” meaning person, and “Hutan,” meaning of the forest.
  • They are the great apes found in Asia, closest living relatives of humans after chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas.
  • They share 97% DNA with humans.
  • Present only available on the islands of Sumatra (Indonesia) and Borneo (shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei).
  • There are 3 types of orangutans:
    • Bornean Orangutan – Critically Endangered.
    • Sumatran Orangutan – Critically Endangered.
    • Tapanuli Orangutan – Critically Endangered.
