- World Thalassemia Day was observed on May 8, 2026, to spread awareness about thalassemia and the importance of early diagnosis.
- Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder in which the body cannot produce healthy haemoglobin properly.
- In India, around 3 to 4 out of every 100 people are silent carriers of the thalassemia gene.
- If both parents are carriers, there is a 25% chance that their child may be born with severe thalassemia.
- The 2026 theme is “Hidden No More: Finding the Undiagnosed, Supporting the Unseen.”
