WTO Fisheries Agreement - India

  • India became the 123rd member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to accept the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies by submitting its Instrument of Acceptance to the WTO.
  • The agreement was adopted at the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) held in Geneva in June 2022.
  • It aims to prohibit subsidies supporting Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing and address subsidies contributing to overfishing and excess fishing capacity.
  • The agreement applies to marine wild capture fishing and excludes aquaculture and inland fisheries from its scope.
  • The agreement entered into force on 15 September 2025 after acceptance by two-thirds of WTO members.
