  • The youngest rhynchosaur ever recorded, Macrocephalosaurus mariensis, was described in the British Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
  • The fossil was discovered in southern Brazil.
  • The specimen consists of a skull measuring <2.5 cm, making it the smallest rhynchosaur hatchling ever found.
  • The fossil shows diagnostic features unique to Macrocephalosaurus mariensis.
  • The specimen represents the 1st perinate record of the Hyperodapedontinae clade and one of the oldest archosauromorph hatchlings found in continental deposits.
