The youngest rhynchosaur ever recorded, Macrocephalosaurus mariensis, was described in the British Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
The fossil was discovered in southern Brazil.
The specimen consists of a skull measuring <2.5 cm, making it the smallest rhynchosaur hatchling ever found.
The fossil shows diagnostic features unique to Macrocephalosaurus mariensis.
The specimen represents the 1st perinate record of the Hyperodapedontinae clade and one of the oldest archosauromorph hatchlings found in continental deposits.
