10 Years of UPI

  • The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) completed 10 years of digital payments in India on 25 August 2026.
  • UPI was launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
  • Annual UPI transactions increased from 1.78 crore in Financial Year (FY) 2016-17 to over 24,162 crores in FY 2025-26, a 13,000-fold rise.
  • Transaction value increased from 0.07 lakh crore to about 314 lakh crore, a rise of over 4,000 times.
  • UPI is currently operational in 11 countries: United Arab Emirates, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece and the Maldives.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recognised UPI as the world’s largest real-time payment system by transaction volume.
