	- The CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was originally conceived in 1963.
 
	- This legally binding treaty entered into force in 1975.
 
	- It protects over 40,900 species (6,610 species of animals and 34,310 species of plants).
 
	- India ratified it in 1976.
 
	- Currently, it has 185 parties (States or regional economic organizations). 
 
	- The Secretariat was provided by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Geneva, Switzerland.
 
	- India hosted its CoP3 in 1981.
