  • The CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) was originally conceived in 1963.
  • This legally binding treaty entered into force in 1975.
  • It protects over 40,900 species (6,610 species of animals and 34,310 species of plants).
  • India ratified it in 1976.
  • Currently, it has 185 parties (States or regional economic organizations). 
  • The Secretariat was provided by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • India hosted its CoP3 in 1981.
  • The species covered by CITES are listed in three Appendices (I, II &III) according to the degree of protection they require.
