- Gogabeel Lake in Katihar district, Bihar, has been designated a site of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
- This bringing India’s total number of Ramsar sites to 94.
- The lake lies between the Ganga River and the Mahananda River and functions as an oxbow wetland, formed by river meandering.
- Gogabeel was earlier notified as Bihar’s first community reserve in 2019.
- More than 90 bird species have been recorded at the site, including about 30 migratory species and several near-threatened or vulnerable birds.
- With Gogabeel’s inclusion, Bihar now has six Ramsar sites.
- India remains first in Asia and third globally in the count of Ramsar wetlands after the United Kingdom and Mexico.
