	- The Global Tiger day was observed on July 29, 2019.
 
	- On this occasion, the results of fourth tiger census was released in India.
 
	- The survey was conducted by Wildlife Institute of India.
 

	- It has revealed that India has a total of 2,967 tigers.
 
	- The first survey was held in 2006.
 
	- It is now held every 4 years.
 

	- Madhya Pradesh saw the highest number of tigers at 526, closely followed by Karnataka (524) and Uttarakhand (442).
 
	- Chhattisgarh and Mizoram saw a decline in tiger population.
 

	- Pench Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of tigers.
 
	- Tx2’ programme was launched by World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) at the 2010 St Petersburg Tiger Summit held in Russia.
 
	- Under it, 13 tiger range countries had agreed to double the world tiger population by 2022.
 
	- Nepal become first country in the world to double its tiger population as part of World Wildlife Foundation’s (WWF) ‘Tx2’ programme.
 

Tamilnadu Specifics
	- All the four Tamilnadu tiger reserves have been ranked “very good” in the census. They are
	
		- Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR)
 
		- Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR)
 
		- Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve (STR)
 
		- Kalakkad – Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve (KMTR)
 
	
	 
	- STR in Tamil Nadu registered the “maximum improvement” since 2014. It has shown a 30% increase in tiger population since 2014.
 
	- STR was also awarded by Prime Minister for highest increment in the quadrennial tiger census.
 
	- There is also a proposal to form a fifth tiger reserve in Tamilnadu linking both
	
		- Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Theni district
