India released its first Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance framework ahead of the AI Impact Summit 2026.
India adopted a principle-based AI governance model instead of introducing a separate AI law.
The framework is based on seven guiding principles (“sutras”), including trust, accountability, transparency, safety, fairness, innovation, and sustainability.
It proposes new institutions such as a national AI governance coordination group and an AI Safety Institute for testing standards and risk assessment.
High-risk AI applications affecting safety, rights, or livelihoods will require human oversight and transparency reporting.
