The first albino Asian water snake (Fowlea piscator) was spotted in the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden.
Albinism is an extremely rare genetic trait in wild snakes.
It is characterised by the absence of melanin pigment, leading to pale coloration and often red eyes.
Earlier cases of hypopigmentation, including albinism or leucism (partial loss of pigmentation), were reported in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mizoram, West Bengal, and Dhanusha district in Nepal.
