- The first albino Asian water snake (Fowlea piscator) was spotted in the Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden.
- Albinism is an extremely rare genetic trait in wild snakes.
- It is characterised by the absence of melanin pigment, leading to pale coloration and often red eyes.
- Earlier cases of hypopigmentation, including albinism or leucism (partial loss of pigmentation), were reported in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mizoram, West Bengal, and Dhanusha district in Nepal.
