Anthrax scare – Assam

  • A buffalo death due to Anthrax has been reported at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam.
  • Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary has the highest concentration of one-horned rhinos in the world and is often called ‘Mini Kaziranga’ due to similar landscape and vegetation.
  • Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis.
  • Anthrax can be fatal for humans who come in contact with infected animals.
  • It does not typically spread directly between people
  • It can occur in four forms: skin, lungs, intestinal, and injection.
  • It is characterised by blisters around swellings on the skin, chest pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever.
